Three Layers of Light in Plain Terms

Ambient light is the general glow: ceiling fixtures, recessed cans, and daylight. Aim for even brightness without harsh shadows in the middle of the room.
Task light is specific: desk lamps, under-cabinet strips in kitchens, reading sconces beside beds. It should be bright enough to read small type without glare on screens.
Accent light highlights one thing: art, a bookshelf, a textured wall. Picture lights and small spot lamps work; you do not need many.
Color temperature matters. Use 2700K to 3000K in living rooms and bedrooms for warm light. Kitchens and offices often feel clearer at 3500K to 4000K.
Put dimmers on every layer if your wiring allows it. Bright mornings and dim evenings should not require changing bulbs. Our lighting section notes which fixtures are dimmer compatible in the specs.
